There are some things you should do soon after moving to a new province.
Here are a few important ones to add to your list.
If you are moving across provinces in Canada, there are a few necessary things to remember once you have moved into your new home. Some of these we may not think of during the stress of moving and can have implications down the road.
Retire BC also offers real estate advice to help you find the right community, if you are interested in moving to BC.
Updating Your Driver’s License
Insurance Corporation of BC (ICBC) is in charge of issuing your Driver’s License and BC Services Card. Be sure to visit one of their locations to update your ID.
Finding a Family Doctor
Many BC residents visit nearby walk-in clinics. To find a family doctor you can sign up on the government registry.
Banking
You will need to update the address on all your bank accounts. This can be done online, but you should also find a local “home” branch to make things easier.

Updating Your Will
Estate Laws can vary across Provinces. It is important to seek legal advice in BC to ensure your will is still valid with BC’s Estate Laws. You should also have a conversation with your executor if they are outside of BC, as they will need to travel during execution (provisions may be needed to cover these costs). Updating your Power of Attorney (where possible) will ensure things move forward smoothly. We can provide a referral for legal advice if needed.
Property Tax Deferment
In BC, you can qualify for property tax deferral when you turn 55. You may also qualify under the families with children program, if you have a child that is under 18 years.
Connecting with Your Community
This last one may be something you put off, but can be important in helping you to settle and get local support and advice. Moving to a new place can be emotional, especially if you have to develop a new support network. Below is a list of seniors’ groups across the Province that can help you connect with others in your community.
