Moving to BC from the US

There are many enticing reasons for Americans to retire in Canada, such as:

  • Free medical care for citizens and permanent residents
  • Low crime rate
  • Large number of Age Friendly Cities
  • Favourable exchange rate for Americans
  • Tax treaty preventing double taxation on income
  • English is the main language (along with French)
  • Close proximity to home country
  • Reliable public transportation
  • Similar culture and values
  • Similar to most parts of the US, buyers do not pay realtor fees in Canada
  • In BC, you can qualify for property tax deferral when you turn 55.

Canada does not currently offer a visa specifically for retirees; however there are several ways to qualify for permanent residency.
