Moving across Canada can be intimidating. Provinces can vary vastly in terms of lifestyle, rules and regulations and infrastructure. At Retire BC we are here to make that transition as easy as possible. We work with clients who are looking to settle in a safe thriving West Coast community. We offer professional advice backed with years of experience. Below is a list of important things you need to do when you move across the country.
Apply for BC Provincial Health Insurance
There can be a few months wait before you receive you BC MSP coverage, so this should be a priority. While you wait you can keep your insurance from your province of origin, however, once you receive your BC Health Card your previous insurance needs to be cancel.
Find a Family Doctor
Many BC residents visit nearby walk-in clinics. To find a family doctor you can sign up on the government registry.
Apply for Your BC Driver’s License
Insurance Corporation of BC (ICBC) is in charge of issuing your Driver’s License and BC Services Card. Be sure to visit one of their locations to update your ID.
Update Your Will
Estate Laws can vary across Provinces. It is important to seek legal advice in BC to ensure your will is still valid with BC’s Estate Laws. You should also have a conversation with your executor if they are outside of BC, as they will need to travel during execution (provisions may be needed to cover these costs). Updating your Power of Attorney (where possible) will ensure things move forward smoothly. We can provide a referral for legal advice if needed.
Property Tax Deferment
In BC, you can qualify for property tax deferral when you turn 55. You may also qualify under the families with children program, if you have a child that is under 18 years.
Find a “Home” Bank
You will need to update the address on all your bank accounts. This can be done online, but you should also find a local “home” branch to make things easier. If you are having banking issues, most institutions will refer you to your home branch for customer support.
